Charlie

I eyed the cryptic text on my phone that Nanna had sent to me as the plane taxied along the runway at Heathrow.

What did “Gird your loins” even mean? The woman had clearly lost the rest of her marbles in the three days I’d been in Milan.

The man who was seated next to me knocked my elbow as he unbuckled his seatbelt the moment we’d come to a stop.

I eyed him as he rushed to gather his things and shove them into his bag. Why did people do that? It wasn’t like the air hostess was going to open the door right away. My lips firmed as the guy jostled me twice more. The seats clearly weren’t designed for people to make a hasty exit.

I pressed myself as tightly against the window as I could, ignoring him while I skipped through the rest of the messages I’d received.

The trip had been exhausting and I’d collapsed into bed every night without the energy to check my social media accounts or my messages. Anyone that said it was easy to be a model had never tried it. The heat in Milan had been great until you were forced to wear layer upon layer of thick wool clothing and stand around trying not to sweat your arse off.

Stand here, hold that, don’t pout, keep the smile off your face, still rang in my ears. Why had I thought going to Milan would be a good idea again? Oh yeah, so I wouldn’t think about a certain someone. A certain someone that Blake fucking Masters hadn’t stopped talking about after it had hit the international news that Griffin had disbanded the conglomerate that Blake’s father had been a part of.

Hell, from the way Blake had spoken it was as if the world had ended. I’d struggled to keep quiet while he’d bitched and complained about a man he didn’t even know. Do you think you know him?

The petulant sounding question caused me to swallow a groan, the sound of the other passengers penetrating past my thoughts. Once the plane was almost empty, I unbuckled my seatbelt and shoved my phone into my hoodie pocket. Then I stood and took my carry-on bag out of the overhead locker. Bidding the aeroplane staff farewell, I exited the plane before shuddering at the stormy grey sky.

Welcome home!

I hurried down the steps and all but ran into the airport to get out of the chilly breeze. Once Inside, I slowed down in order to pull my phone out of my hoodie and check the train times to Brighton. With no need to collect a bag, I sped up, knowing that if I could get to the tube station quickly I’d be able to catch the next train.

By the time I was seated on the train, I was breathless and sweaty. I dreaded to think how I smelt after spending the tube journey next to a guy who’d smelt like he’d pissed himself. The couple opposite me were playing tonsil hockey so I pulled out my Bluetooth headphones from my pocket.
